On June 19, 2024, Desktop Metal delivered customer-approved platinum on its production system P-1 using a specialty powder developed by Legor, a full-service jewelry manufacturing solutions provider. Legor's Powmet series of certified ultra-pure metal powders can be used in laser and binder jet 3D printing systems. Legor's 3D-printed platinum jewelry designs include classic wedding rings, gemstones and delicate leaf earrings, which will be part of Desktop Metal's multi-material, multi-client jewelry showcase at the upcoming Rapid + TCT show in Los Angeles.

Desktop Metal is a mass-production 3D printing technology developer that combines production-capable 3D printing technology with high-performance materials and selects applications and technologies to help advance the next generation of 3D printing technology. Product applications include automotive, new energy and customizable patient care products.

Ric Fulop, Founder and CEO of Desktop Metal, said: "The certification of Legor's Powmet Platinum on the production system P-1 is another important milestone in the application of binder-jet 3D printing in the jewelry, watch making and luxury industries. Platinum is a difficult material to process in the jewelry industry because of its high hardness and high melting point. Desktop Metal's binder-jet 3D printing process simplifies the platinum production process and enables completely new and previously impossible designs."

Fabio Di Falco, Marketing and Customer Support Manager at Legor, said: "Legor is currently experiencing a huge market interest in 3D printing technology, in particular adhesive spray technology. This enables Legor to meet a variety of needs, from prototyping to small batch production, as well as larger scale production. With binder-jet 3D printing, designers can imagine and create objects that cannot currently be produced with other technologies, pushing the boundaries of creativity and shaping the future."

In 2023, Legor invested in the Desktop Metal Production System P-1, a high-speed binder-jet 3D printing system using single injection (SPJ) technology. Legor noted that binder-jet 3D printing has several advantages over traditional manufacturing methods and other forms of 3D printed jewelry manufacturing, including the rapid production of jewelry samples without molds or printing stands; New design freedom to quickly and economically produce hollow, interconnected, complex and mass customized designs; Remove certain processing steps related to jewelry design, such as welding; Simplify the production of difficult-to-process materials, such as platinum, which often require special tools; And low-waste production that is environmentally friendly and uses only the necessary amount of metal needed to create the design.

Fabio Di Falco said: "Sustainability is an important advantage of binder-jet 3D printing technology for the jewellery industry, especially Legor. Binder jet 3D printing technology represents an important step towards more sustainable production - increasing energy efficiency and reducing the amount of materials used. In fact, the amount of material used in the adhesive spray is exactly the amount needed to make an item, greatly reducing waste. Unused metal powders in the process can be reused, reducing the need for new raw materials and the risks associated with metal extraction."
